City University of Hong Kong
Hong Kong

Completion: 1993
This project was won in an international competition in 1985 by a joint venture of PTP and Fitch and Chung. The first phase, which was opened in 1990, accommodated 13,000 full-time and part-time students. The second phase, opened in 1993, has increased the capacity to 20,000 students. The campus occupies a 154,000 square metre valley site with steeply sloping sides. The masterplanning of this University was particularly complex with added constraints of airport height restrictions and an MTRC tunnel beneath. The solution: a low-rise building strategy. To foster growth and flexibility, the plan is based on a tartan grid of 15 x 15 metres with a 5 metre strip for support facilities, circulation space and extensions.
